The 20^th Birthday of Ostroh Academy

                On the 9^th of October Ostroh Academy celebrated an anniversary that was an outstanding event we had a great honor to participate in. As a matter of fact, academy decided to refuse from extensive celebration, but in any case it was exciting, everyone felt delighted and content due to special warm atmosphere and loads of different small events and activities.

         This year was made a strong accent on patriotic actions. Actions speak louder than words, so participants of flashmobe formed live map of Ukraine to say that our country is indivisible. Moreover, guests with students and rector planted in the academic park bushes in the form of our national emblem. Also people could write letters for soldiers to support and to thank them, to express their impatience. With the help of such actions students and lecturers tried to make clear their attitude to the recent situation in the country.

         The second part included traditional Fair proposing uncountable amount of entertainments. It included concert, Ukrainian cuisine, souvenirs and hand-made production, drawing portraits, auction of marks, competition for the best costume of bee and festive cake.

         There was commemoration of Ukrainian victims in the evening, where students were watching short videos about Euromaidan.

         As I was saying, the celebration was a classic example of the most meaningful and patriotic intentions. At any rate, it was a real effort to organize such an event and it means that hearts of students and lecturers are on fire and this fire spreads and lit a fire in the hearts of other people to be active and responsible citizens of our country, especially in such a difficult time.

Live Your Life To The Fullest

There are some moments in our life when you feel uneasy. You don`t manage to do something and you are gutted. You fight against circumstances and feel absolutely devastated. Sometimes you are so vulnerable that are going to be in tears because of any nonsense. And one of the most unpleasant cases is when you completely lose your temper, shout hysterically and offend people.

If you consult an expert, he will tell you, that it is harmful for our mental health to bottle bad emotions up, you should pour them out. But you have to remember, that the way we behave ourselves have an impact on people, who are around us. So it does no wonders for contagious qualities of bad mood: people absorb bad vibes we radiate. Try to remember: maybe, someone`s bad mood today was a by-product of your desperately unhappy facial expression, or unpleasant words?  Isn`t it better to share with jubilance or euphoria, for example?

That doesn`t mean that you have to suppress your feelings, just try to reduce stress. To be happy you just have to think, that you are happy. Look around you: isn`t this world amazing? We already have the most valuable things in this life and every situation has a good side too. We have only one chance, we live only once, so wear your heart on your sleeve, but be filled only with positive emotions.

                                       

Body language

They say that gestures of people can say much more, than words. You can never tell, if the words of a person are true, but movements or some actions can display what people don`t want to show up. As a matter of fact, they show unconscious expression of our feelings and emotions. At any rate, you can also misinterpret somebody`s gestures and jump into conclusions, if you are not enough observant.

Actions speak louder than words, so I decided to look out for my groupmates` behavior and find out if combinations of gestures can really imply certain emotions. On Monday we had a practical class – Political Studies. So I have made such generalizations:

-         Nearly everyone was nervous, some people stroked with their fingers;

-         One girl was biting her fingernails while reading and revising the material;

-         The boy, who wasn`t prepared, tried to avoid eye contact with teacher;

-         My neighbor told me, that her hands became sweat, when she was giving an answer;

-         As for me, I went red because I felt embarrassed and was afraid if my answer was right;

-         Even so, there were people, whose excitement reflected in excessive gestures.

As a matter of fact, body language of my groupmates displayed nearly the same emotions, but expressed in different ways. In any case, I could interpret them correctly because I realized the situation and expected such reaction. But, as I was saying, we have to bear in mind, that context, circumstances are very important for understanding the situation, because the same gestures can have different meaning in different situations.

     “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” – said Oscar Wilde, and we can`t disagree with him.

     Our life is unpredictable and you can never tell what is going to happen next day and which knowledge life will demand from you. Only active people become successful, because they understand, that nobody is foolproof and they just can`t stay impatient, because studying is too magnetic. Awareness of impossibility to overdo in studying brings excitement and encouragement to learn more and more useful and interesting things.

     On the other hand, there are passive people, who misjudge their abilities. To exemplify, this people don`t want to clarify anything when they are ill-informed, or have miscalculated something, or are misinformed by somebody. They are preconceived and usually are not flexible, can`t interact with changeable world, so are much more disadvantaged, than people, who are hungry for knowledge.

     To sum up, it`s a personal choice of a person, to be active, or to be passive but we have to remember:

     It`s not a secret that a person have to know at least one language in addition to our mother tongue to become successful and simply not to lose contact with world around us. We need it not only to talk business, but also to make some small talks. For sure, English is used more often. If you know English you can come into touch with almost anyone, not only with native speakers. It is the official language of many leading countries.

     Learning English nowadays is not like it was 20-30 years ago. So let me tell the difference. Of course, we appreciate old methods, such as reading, speaking, using dictionary, doing exercises and so forth. To speak up my mind, the most interesting and effective way is to communicate with other people in English. Chat with people, talk non-stop, practice! Write a letter to someone, whose first language is English. Also it is possible to connect with people by internet. But if you don`t have opportunity to get hold of somebody to improve your English and you are not out of touch with computer – welcome to modern interpretation of good old methods. Clap your hands in astonishment, because now you don`t need to use huge awkward dictionary any more – there are a lot of electronic equivalents which contain much more information than printed issues. Moreover even the process of studying will make you yawn anymore, because nowadays you can bump into a plenty of websites and programs created specially for learning languages with laugh and fun.

     I was only the second person in my family to go to university, after my sister. So when I got to Oxford, in the autumn of 1983, I didn't have a lot of tradition to live up to. You quite quickly met people who were ready to tell you about what their fathers or grandfathers had done "in their day". One of the first people I met told me that his father had – as an undergraduate – accidentally killed a swan while punting and had plucked and drawn the thing before roasting it on the fire in his room.
